What Is Individual Counseling?

Individual Counseling is a unique and special relationship, in which, you can safely and privately process any of your thoughts, beliefs, behavior patterns, feelings, and memories.  One primary goal of individual counseling is to achieve “catharsis”, which is an internal response within the client where they feel relief by sharing their struggles and gaining insight.  In addition to feeling relief, individual counseling also includes an element of personal change and working through the challenges that life gives us.  Clients may seek individual counseling for ANY issue in which the goal is to either decrease internal suffering or move forward toward personal growth.

My Approach

I believe that counseling/therapy is more than just a profession.   For me, counseling is a calling.   For as  long as I can remember, I have been drawn to hurting people and started supporting friends and family from a young age. As a professional, I bring both relational skills as well as tools into our sessions. I am trained in several evidence-based therapies and I love to partner with my clients to create specific treatment plans designed for each persons’ unique situation. I am willing to walk through difficult times with people and support them most when hope feels distant.  I am a good listener, I am always genuine with my clients, I am not afraid to challenge unhealthy thinking or behaviors in my clients, and I am truly invested in helping my clients accomplish their goals.

I am qualified and comfortable working with a wide range of issues including, but not limited to: life transitions, academic issues, family chaos/conflict, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, self harming, suicidal thinking, self esteem, obsessive behaviors, adhd, parenting strategies, empowerment, mindfulness/meditation, crisis intervention, emotional regulation, interpersonal skills, stress management, self esteem, communication skills, drug and alcohol issues, and couples counseling.  I do have a special place in my hearts adolescents and young adults.

What To Expect

Individual counseling sessions are typically scheduled for 50 minutes, but 75 minute sessions are available by request.  The first couple of sessions are focused gathering personal history, building trust, and establishing therapeutic goals.  Due to the complexity of each client’s unique situation, I cannot predict the exact length of therapy or guarantee a specific outcome. Personal growth and change may be easy and swift at times, but may also be slow and frustrating. Some clients might only attend a few sessions while others may attend therapy for a few years.  I believe therapy is complete when you have accomplished your current goals.
